This is my favorite way to eat to eat tofu. Hands down.
Ingredients:
1 Block Extra Firm Tofu
3 tablespoons nutritional yeast
2 tablespoons All Purpose flour (substitute with cornstarch if you want it crispier)
1 tsp. Garlic Powder
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. fresh ground pepper
Vegetable oil*
Method:
- Press tofu for at least 20 minutes (see THIS post on tofu if you’re unfamiliar with pressing tofu)
- While tofu is pressing, mix dry ingredients in a large, lidded container.
- Slice tofu in half lengthwise to make two 1″ thick slabs.
- Cut into 1″ cubes
- Heat vegetable oil in pan over medium heat until shimmering in pan
- Place tofu into container with dry ingredients, make sure the lid is on tight and shake container gently to evenly coat.
- Using hands, pull tofu pieces out of container and place in pan
- Cook 5-7 minutes per side until crispy, turning with chopsticks or a fork
- Transfer to paper towel lined plate to soak up excess oil and cool.
- Add another sprinkle of salt (if desired) and enjoy!
*Note: seriously. don’t pan fry in olive oil. Use a neutral oil with a higher smoke point so you don’t burn the oil and give your food a weird taste. I’ll use grapeseed oil as a substitute for vegetable.
