Popcorn Tofu – Pan Fried

This is my favorite way to eat to eat tofu. Hands down.

Ingredients:

1 Block Extra Firm Tofu
3 tablespoons nutritional yeast
2 tablespoons All Purpose flour (substitute with cornstarch if you want it crispier)
1 tsp. Garlic Powder
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. fresh ground pepper
Vegetable oil*

Method:

  1. Press tofu for at least 20 minutes (see THIS post on tofu if you’re unfamiliar with pressing tofu)
  2. While tofu is pressing, mix dry ingredients in a large, lidded container.
  3. Slice tofu in half lengthwise to make two 1″ thick slabs.
  4. Cut into 1″ cubes
  5. Heat vegetable oil in pan over medium heat until shimmering in pan
  6. Place tofu into container with dry ingredients, make sure the lid is on tight and shake container gently to evenly coat.
  7. Using hands, pull tofu pieces out of container and place in pan
  8. Cook 5-7 minutes per side until crispy, turning with chopsticks or a fork
  9. Transfer to paper towel lined plate to soak up excess oil and cool.
  10. Add another sprinkle of salt (if desired) and enjoy!

*Note: seriously. don’t pan fry in olive oil. Use a neutral oil with a higher smoke point so you don’t burn the oil and give your food a weird taste. I’ll use grapeseed oil as a substitute for vegetable.
